HMRC also checks the return itself and writes to you if you are over. If no letter comes, it is still up to you to check.
Your qualifying income is your self employment turnover plus your property income, both before expenses. Employment pay, partnership profit shares, dividends and pensions do not count.
Each start date is judged on an earlier tax year. Over £50,000 in 2024 to 2025 means you start on 6 April 2026. Over £30,000 in 2025 to 2026 means 6 April 2027. Over £20,000 in 2026 to 2027 means 6 April 2028. The test is more than the figure, so exactly £30,000 is not over.
If a sole trade ran for less than a full year, HMRC scales it up to 12 months. If your property income covers less than a year, scale it up yourself before you type it in.
Checked on 20 October 2026.
Turnover. It is your self employment income plus your property income before any expenses or allowances are taken off.

No. Only self employment and property income count. Pay from a job, partnership profit shares, dividends and pensions do not.
